Brainspotting Intensive or Regular Session?
One Hour or a Deep Dive: Choosing Your Brainspotting Session
One of the questions I get most is: how do I know if I need a one hour brainspotting session or an intensive session?
The difference between the time you need is not about how bad your situation is. People sometimes assume an intensive is for someone who is really struggling and a regular session is for something minor, but this is not the case.
Both types of sessions use the same gentle method. Both trust the same innate intelligence of the nervous system that knows how to heal. What actually separates them is scope: how much you want to look at and readiness to move through it. This is to say whether you are moving through what is in front of you or you have decided it is time to go all the way in on something big.
When a Regular Brainspotting Session Fits
Maybe there is a specific thing stirring like an anxiety that has come up, a situation you are walking through, a reaction that keeps showing up and you would like to understand it. Maybe you have something you can name and point to. “This is the thing, this is what I want to work with today.” In a session like this, we find where it lives in the body, let our awareness follow sensation or experience, and by the end that particular charge has usually settled.
Regular sessions are also wonderful for staying regulated over time. Life keeps happening, and things keep landing on us, and a lot of my clients come in when they feel themselves getting knocked out of their window of tolerance, feeling too wired, too flooded, or too scattered. We use Brainspotting to bring them back to balance.. It is a bit like tending to yourself as you go, rather than waiting until everything has accumulated.
If you can name the theme, pattern, habit, or stuck point, a regular session is very likely the right place to start.
When an Intensive Brainspotting Session Fits
An intensive is for the bigger picture.
I sometimes call it the internal archaeological dig, because that is what it can feel like. Instead of one thread of an experience, we are looking at the whole tapestry of your life. This is the session for addressing deep belief systems that have shaped how you see yourself, for the experiences that have stayed with you across your whole life, and for the patterns you can feel running underneath everything without being able to point to where they start. Intensive sessions are for the moment you find yourself saying, I am ready to finally heal from this.
Because we are looking at so much, an intensive is longer and more condensed. Rather than doing this piece by piece over many weeks, we gather into a deeper stretch of focused time to accelerate the release. It is especially good for people whose lives are genuinely busy and who would rather go deep once than come back week after week.
Where a regular session pulls one thread, an intensive is more like sitting down with the map of your whole life, seeing how things are connected to form an operating pattern and giving yourself the room to truly work through it.
How to Tell Which One You Want
If you can name the specific thing to work on, start with a regular session.
If you cannot name one thing because it feels like a great many things, or like one very large thing, and you feel ready to really go inward, this is what the intensive is for.
And if you are not sure, that is completely all right. You do not have to arrive with the answer. You can begin with a regular session and see how the work feels in your body, and we can always decide together that it is time to go deeper. You can also book a consultation call with me and we can discover on the call what would be the best fit.
Whether you want to work with something specific in a regular session or go deeper in an intensive, we can start wherever feels right — in Madison or by telehealth.
