About Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

EAP is a powerful and effective therapeutic experiential process for healing. It is through the hands on approach with the horse that one experiences emotional growth, learning and healing. Horses naturally carry qualities of love, peace, calm, grace, gentleness, hope, magic, and mystery.  Just observing a horse grazing in a pasture can easily bring one to a place of peace.  Being in the presence of a horse helps one to reconnect and awaken to Spirit.

Working with Gemma is powerful because she will give you immediate and honest feedback because she is always communicating.  Through this process one can learn awareness, boundaries, respect, patience, tolerance, balance and emotional regulation.  This approach uses metaphors and self-awareness techniques to assist others in figuring out how to shift out of old patterning, beliefs, attitudes, and habits that have been blocking them from living a full life.  It is so much more than just “talking” it is experiencing, and it is FUN!

Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to learn.  Some things don’t leave when we expect them to. They circle back. The same feelings. The same patterns. The same places in the body that tighten or brace. This isn’t because we’ve failed. And it isn’t because we haven’t tried hard enough.  It’s because the body learns slowly and safely.

Horses understand this instinctively.  They don’t rush understanding. They don’t demand insight. They stay present until something settles enough to shift on its own.

How scientific studies are proving the benefits of being with horses

In “The Horse-Human Heart Connection-Mindful Horse, Mindful Leader” by Ellen Kaye Gehrke, Ph.D and Dr. Rollin McCraty, the research explores the emotional bond between horses and humans using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) measurements. The study found that horses and humans can synchronize their heart rhythm during interactions, especially when humans express positive emotions.  This heart coherence leads to improved emotional well-being and stress reduction for both parties.  The research highlights that horses are highly sensitive to human emotions and can mirror them, creating a unique and powerful connection.  This synchronization occurs through electromagnetic fields and non-verbal communication.

It is an absolute gift and privilege to have them walk beside us.
